Central School Students, Sharing Shelf Help Needy Children

The students beat the challenge by the Sharing Shelf of Family Services of Westchester.

LARCHMONT, NY — The Sharing Shelf of Family Services of Westchester challenged students, families and businesses in the region to collect at least 2,500 pairs of new socks and underwear for low-income children in the area by Dec. 14. Students at the Central School took on the challenge.

They even surpassed the goal by collecting more than 3,000 pairs of those basic necessities.

The Sharing Shelf, Westchester’s clothing bank for children, collects new and gently used clothing for infants, children and teens. This clothing is then distributed at no cost to over 2,700 low-income children each year through partnerships with area social service agencies, nonprofits, schools and hospitals. Each child receives a week’s worth of clothing and the program relies on donations of new socks and underwear to include in their packages.

“The incredible generosity of these children and their families is inspirational. The donations from just this one school will carry us through January and beyond. We know that there are children that miss school because they lack clean underwear and some of the children we work with do not even own a pair of socks. Essentials like these will not only keep children warm, they’ll keep them in school where they belong,” said Deborah Blatt, Program Director.
