Dr. Robert Shaps Learns about 'Maker Curriculum'
The Mamaroneck superintendent - and Assistant Superintendent Annie Ward - recently traveled to Virginia for a maker's conference.
Mamaroneck School Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps recently attended the national Maker Curriculum Conference in Virginia and was interviewed about it on the Newsplex television station.
“It is clearly a philosophy in the [Albemarle County] school system,” said Shaps. “It is a belief system,
and it gives us a great opportunity to partner and come see how it’s unfolding in the school system so we can take it back and think about this in terms of how it would look in our own schools.”
Shaps and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Annie Ward attended the conference and have been inspired by the ideas they look forward to bringing back to Mamaroneck, they said. Started by Maker Faire Founder, Dale Dougherty, the maker movement is about creation, innovation and hands-on experimentation.

Shaps was pleased to visit a place that shares the same values and interest in bringing the maker movement into the natural learning process of the schools. “It’s about inquiry, wondering, taking what you know and doing something with it,” he added.
