Energy Smart Homes Eligible For Big Tax Credits In Town Of Mamaroneck
Homeowners who reduce carbon footprints won't just help save the environment and save on utility bills — they can also save at tax time.
MAMARONECK, NY — Not only can Town of Mamaroneck homeowners save big money by making their homes more energy efficient, they can get free help to make it happen.
The Town of Mamaroneck wants residents to know they can save money, increase comfort, and reduce use of fossil fuels for heating and cooling by participating in EnergySmart Homes. The program, run by nonprofit Sustainable Westchester, includes a no-cost analysis of home energy usage with recommendations for improvements, information about rebates and tax credits associated with clean energy upgrades, and access to a list of vetted contractors experienced in working with local households.
"The Town of Mamaroneck continues to be a leader in environmental responsibility, certified by NY State as a Climate Smart Community and a Clean Energy Community," Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Jaine Elkind Eney explained. "The EnergySmart Homes program provides homeowners with objective professional evaluations to make informed decisions with the advantages of financial incentives."

The announcement is especially timely as winter weather is just around the corner.
Thousands of residents saw increases in the cost of heating their homes last winter. EnergySmart Homes will help homeowners identify opportunities for savings and provide access to resources that will help them make improvements while reducing dependence on systems that generate harmful emissions, according to Sustainable Westchester. People who live in homes that are drafty in the wintertime, have rooms that are difficult to warm or cool, are using systems that run on costly oil, or have climate control equipment approaching end of life can benefit from participating in the program.

"In New York State, buildings are the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions, so decarbonization is a critical component of the clean energy transition," Sustainable Westchester EnergySmart Homes Program Director Lauren Brois said. "Sustainable Westchester offers energy efficiency solutions to assist residents in accessing the resources to achieve upgrades and quality-of-life improvements."
EnergySmart Homes begins that process with a free home energy assessment to determine how effectively their systems are working. The customized analysis reveals issues such as leaky air ducts, under insulated walls, worn weather stripping, and degraded ventilation to uncover opportunities for improvements that are safer, quieter, and more reliable.
Rebates, tax credits, subsidies and other incentives are available for improvements like installing air source and ground source heating, hot water, and cooling, according to Boris.
