ABOUT WILLIAM BROAD

William J. Broad is a science journalist and senior writer at The New York Times sharing two Pulitzer Prizes with his colleagues, as well as an Emmy and a duPont. He joined the newspaper in 1983 and writes about everything from exploding stars and the secret life of marine mammals to the spread of nuclear arms and the inside story on why the Titanic sank so rapidly. Hundreds of his articles have appeared in the Science Times section, and hundreds more on the front page.

The author or co-author of eight books, he wrote Germs; Biological Weapons and America’s Secret War with Times colleagues Judith Miller and Stephen Engelberg. It became a number-one Times bestseller during the 2001 terrorist attacks and the ensuing anthrax mailings that killed or sickened twenty-two Americans. The book also became the basis for a PBS Nova program on germ terrorism. In 2002, the documentary won and Emmy.

 Mr. Broad’s books have been translated into more than a dozen languages.
