Former Assistant DA Dies During Swim Across LI Sound Charity Event

LARCHMONT, NY — An annual event that offers hope to those touched by cancer was marred by tragedy this weekend.
Retired Westchester County Assistant District Attorney Patrick Moore died after becoming overcome during the swim.
Moore was in distress in the water and was rescued, Larchmont police told CBS News New York. The 62-year-old was taken to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital, where he later died.

Today, Moore's collegues mourned the loss.
"The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office mourns the sudden passing of former Assistant District Attorney Patrick Moore, a beloved colleague, mentor and friend," the Westchester County District Attorney' s Office said in a statement released Monday. "Pat recently retired from a remarkable 35-year career at the Westchester DA’s Office, where he was a devoted and distinguished public servant. For those of us who had the privilege to have worked with Pat, we will always remember his dedication to justice, sharp wit, and generosity of spirit. Even in retirement Pat was doing what he loved most—helping others. Our deepest sympathies are with Pat’s family during this most difficult time."

Law enforcement across Westchester County also felt the loss.
"The Yonkers Police Department is crushed to learn of the untimely passing of our friend and colleague, recently retired Westchester County District Attorney’s Office Deputy Chief Pat Moore," Yonkers police said in a statement Monday evening. "Pat was a dedicated and conscientious prosecutor who showed tremendous patience with his police witnesses. Most importantly, Pat was a devoted family man and a proud member of our YPD Family. His kindness and humor will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace brother
The Swim Across America - Long Island Sound swim in Larchmont benefitted Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Cancer Support Team and Weill Cornell Medicine. The Swim Across America - Long Island Sound swim is in its 31st year and just surpassed raising $25 million for its beneficiaries.
The swim was started at the Larchmont Yacht Club and finished at the Larchmont Shore Club. Swimmers participated in 10K, 5K and 2K events beginning at 5:30 a.m.
