Gas Explosion in Orienta Injures Two ConEd Workers; Investigation Underway
Both men were taken to Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, and have since been released.
The cause of a small gas explosion and consequent fire at 615 Claflin Ave. that occurred yesterday at approximately 2 p.m. is still unknown, and an investigation is underway, according to Sandy Miller, Consolidated Edison's Director of Public Affairs in Westchester.
The accident left two Con Edison employees, who were working on a gas main, with burns. Both were taken to Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, and have since been released.
Shortly after the incident, several firefighters, emergency workers and approximately half a dozen emergency vehicles were on the scene.

"We received a call for the explosion, and when we arrived, the fire was out," said Dean DeLitta, Village of Mamaroneck fire chief. The block was sealed off to prevent entry.
The accident resulted in a gas leak, but is not a threat to surrounding residences, which have been checked, DeLitta said, noting that an accident of this sort could have been worse if the incident had taken place indoors.

"A gas leak or explosion is most dangerous indoors, or in an enclosed area," he said.
A neighbor noted Con Edison had been working in the area for the past three days.
