'It's the Student, Not the College' Author at Larchmont Public Library

Local Author Dispels College Myths Regarding Success on October 26th

Kristin White, author and academic advisor, will be at the Larchmont Public Library on October 26 at 7 p.m. to discuss and sign copies of her new book, It’s the Student, Not the College: The Secrets of Succeeding at Any School—Without Going Broke or Crazy. The book not only dispels the notion that attending an elite school guarantees success in life, but it also supplies a roadmap on how to prepare for success in today’s job market no matter what school you attend.

It’s the Student, Not the College addresses the college admissions culture, which is filled with pressure for students and parents, often focusing on admission to elite schools with miniscule acceptance rates, and overwhelming costs. White’s book helps to define what to consider, including finances, to make a school a good fit and how motivated students can make any school their dream school.

As an educational consultant, White has advised hundreds of students and parents, and at Darien Academic Advisors in Darien, CT, she and her husband Michael, help families plan for higher education and help students find their passions. Her book encourages students to start their college experience with a plan to build a personal “success profile” by adopting beneficial traits that help stellar students make the grade in school and in life. The Success Profile ultimately helps students obtain the skills employers are looking for, but find lacking in today’s workforce.

“I wanted to remind people that what a student does in college counts more than where they go and wanted to reveal the real secrets of success,” said White. The book provides essential advice based on Whites’ years of experience as well as on facts based in research. She is quick to point out that independent studies back up her viewpoint, “Gallup-Purdue did a study designed to measure both the college experiences and the lives of college graduates and found that the selectivity of the college a student attended mattered less than what a student actually did while on campus.” Studies by economists Alan Krueger and Stacy Dale likewise found that elite college attendance didn’t give top students a boost in future earnings.
