K-9 Backing Bike Patrol 'Sniffs Out' Felonies During Stop: VOMPD
A stop for an illegal turn that found much bigger issues proves that police never know what they might encounter out there.

MAMARONECK, NY — On Saturday, just before 5 p.m., a Village of Mamaroneck bicycle officer at the 300 block of Mamaroneck Avenue saw a driver make a prohibited left turn and made a traffic stop, but that is just the beginning of this story.
A K-9 officer who saw the traffic stop in progress also stopped to provide assistance.
After speaking with the driver, the K-9 officer retrieved his partner "Ike" to conduct an exterior "sniff" of the vehicle for narcotics. Ike indicated for the presence of narcotics and officers searched the car. Police say they recovered a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun and several individually packaged envelopes of drugs.

The driver, a 26-year-old man from Scarsdale, was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, felony criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree (because the handgun contained 10 rounds of ammunition), criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal contempt (because the driver was barred from possessing a firearm as a stipulation of an unrelated order of protection).
Police said the driver was arraigned in Village of Mamaroneck Court and bail was set at $5,000, but because he was unable to arrange bail, he was transported to the Westchester County Jail pending his next court appearance.
