Larchmont Firefighters Help Au Pairs Learn Fire Safety
The au pairs currently live with host families and help care for their children as part of a cultural exchange experience.

LARCHMONT, NY — A company that arranges for families to get au pairs has worked with the Larchmont Fire Department to make sure children in the young people's care are safe. Ulrike Heregger with Cultural Care Au Pair arranged for 50 au pairs from more than 20 countries to attend a fire safety meeting in March at the Larchmont Fire House.
Firefighters taught the au pairs — who currently live with host families and help care for their children as part of a cultural exchange experience — how to use fire extinguishers, when to call the fire department and what to do in case of a grease fire.
Heregger said her organization’s Continuing Safety Education Program is designed to provide the au pairs with ongoing training in the area of child safety.

“As a local childcare consultant, it is my responsibility to plan and execute three au pair meetings dedicated to the SCEP curriculum,” she said.
The core curriculum covers household poisoning prevention, water safety and drowning prevention and fire and carbon monoxide poisoning prevention.

“So I usually reach out to the fire department to ask them to help me facilitate the fire safety meeting as they are the experts in this field. And they are wonderful to work with,” Heregger said.
