Lions Conduct Vision Screenings At Mamaroneck Avenue School

MAMARONECK, NY — Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions conducted the first of four scheduled vision screenings at the Mamaroneck Avenue School Friday, Jan. 11, for students in grades from kindergarten to five — 89 students were screened. Families participated voluntarily by completing a consent form for this free screening. according to organizers.

The tests were done with a special diagnostic camera, which, in seconds, can detect six abnormal conditions. If a defect was found, a report was submitted to the school and to the parents for professional follow up. Undetected vision problems are a common cause of learning limitations. Follow-up testing and providing of eyeglasses is either provided by government support or through the Lions other eye-care programs.

These free tests are part of Lions SEE (Screening Eyes Early), an official project of the Lions Clubs of New York State and Bermuda, in partnership with the KidSight program, the Lions national initiative.

Lions KidSight screenings have been conducted regularly at area pre-schools, shelters and Head Start programs, with specially trained Lion volunteers. The Mamaroneck School screening is a school-year pilot program, initiated with support from the STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck and in close coordination with school nurse Madeline Lukas and partnership with the Mamaroneck School District.

Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions are part of the Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization with 1.5 million members. Eye health & support for the blind are the signature programs of the Lions.
