Mamaroneck District To Discuss Enrollment, Space Issues

The topic is on the agenda for Tuesday's budget meeting.

MAMARONECK, NY — The future of the Mamaroneck school district as it relates to enrollment and space issues will be topic of discussion at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Oct. 17.

In a letter sent to residents, board members said burgeoning enrollment is an issue that will require significant input from the community.

The board will spend a number of meetings during the 2017-18 school year discussing how to manage enrollment for the 2018-19 school year and how to prepare for the next two to five years for anticipated continue growth.

Enrollment has increased at every level and across each elementary school. Our enrollment now exceeds 5600 students — nearly 650 students more than we enrolled in the fall of 2010. Since that time, our student population has grown 13 percent, with the largest increases over the past three years.

The approximate schedule for the board meeting Tuesday, which will be held in the Mamaroneck High School Tiered Classroom, is 7 p.m. audit report, business agenda, budget update; 7:30 p.m. Co-Op Camp update; 8 p.m. Food Services Presentation and 8:15 p.m. “Listen and Learn” re: enrollment/space challenges.

There will also be two community meetings held at the Hommocks Middle School at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23. Those meeting will provide opportunities for people to ask questions and offer feedback.

The board said it will be seeking input regarding the process for convening a task force to investigate potential options.

“These meetings represent the beginning of the journey,” the board said. “We will plan additional opportunities for community conversation as needed, and in the weeks ahead, we will communicate details regarding additional meetings and share additional resources.”
