Mamaroneck Man Arrested On DUI Charge In New Canaan: Cops

The suspect allegedly nearly caused an accident by driving in the wrong direction on New Norwalk Road.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A 43-year-old Mamaroneck, NY man was arrested by New Canaan police on a charge of driving under the influence at about 12:45 a.m. on Monday after he was seen allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road and running a red light, according to authorities.

William J. Ford was spotted northbound in the southbound lane of New Norwalk Road, nearly causing an accident after he allegedly ran the red light near the intersection at East Avenue, said police.

"The officer conducted a [motor vehicle stop] and upon speaking with Ford (the operator), the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath," wrote police in a statement. "Subsequent [Standardized Field Sobriety Tests] were administered which Ford failed, and [he] was taken into custody on the [below] charges. Ford refused a breath test to determine his [blood alcohol content]."

Ford was charged with:

  • Illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence
  • Failure to obey a traffic signal
  • Failure to drive upon the right
  • Illegal operation of a motor vehicle without an ignition device

"It should be noted that Ford had 2 previous DWI arrests from NY State and was required to have an ignition interlock device on his vehicle; he did not and thus the reason for this charge," wrote police.

Ford was released after posting a $750 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on July 7.
