Mamaroneck Police Blotters: Small Fire at School Playground

Police find a small fire at the Mamaroneck Avenue School playground. There are two burglaries and one car is stolen.

Last week, the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department investigated the following incidents:

Trespassing

- A 20-year-old man from the Town of Mamaroneck was arrested in the early morning of April 6th for driving on private property. At around 1:30 a.m., police received a report of a vehicle driving in a circular fashion on the Hampshire Country Club's golf course. Through investigation, Giani Brussich was arrested and charged with criminal mischief in the second degree (felony), criminal trespassing (misdemeanor) and criminal possession of a weapon- a gravity knife- police said.

Assault

- On April 7th, at approximately 11 p.m., a man flagged down a police officer saying he had been assaulted by two men. Another officer stopped two suspects fitting the victim's description. According to the testimony, both men harassed the victim and one of them hit him in the face with a closed fist. Both men were charged with assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor. They are 22 and 19 years old and residents of the Village.

Criminal mischief

- On April 9th, at around 11:30 p.m., an officer on patrol driving by Mamaroneck Avenue School noticed a small fire in the school's playground area. The fire was at the base of one of the slides and was melting some of the plastic, which caused a large hole at the bottom, police said. The Fire Department responded and took care of the situation. The school was notified and the matter is still under investigation.

- A 2003 Buick was damaged while parked on North Barry Avenue between the night of April 4th and the morning of April 5th. The car was parked in a driveway and had the passenger's side window smashed.

- The radiator line of a truck was damaged while the vehicle was parked on Fayette Avenue. The incident took place between noon on April 2nd and the morning of April 5th, police said.

- On April 7th at roughly 2:30 a.m., a police officer on patrol reported locating a parked vehicle with an open door and broken window on Waverly Avenue. The driver's front side window had been broken and the vehicle ransacked, police said. It is unknown if anything was missing. Police tried to contact the vehicle's owner but all numbers were disconnected. The vehicle was subsequently impounded for safekeeping.

Burglary

- Three utility carts were stolen from the Hampshire Country Club between March 18th and April 9th. An employee reported seeing one door to the maintenance shed housing the vehicles open and the other damaged. The carts were last seen in the garage on March 18th, according to police reports.

- A business on Halstead Avenue was broken into overnight on April 10th-11th. The front glass door was broken and DVDs and other items were missing, police said.

Hit & run

- An officer was flagged down by driver whose vehicle had been hit in the rear as she was driving near Orienta Avenue. The driver of the vehicle who hit the victim told her to pull over at the nearby gas station, and then fled the scene, she told police. A passenger in the victim's vehicle later identified the suspect on Mt. Pleasant Avenue, at which point a police officer was flagged down. The suspect, a 18-year-old male from the Village, was arrested and charged with unlicensed operation and leaving the scene of an auto accident. His mother received a summons for permitting the unlicensed operation.

Stolen vehicle

- A 2003 Acura was stolen from New Street between the evening of April 9th and the morning of April 10th, the victim told police.

Identity theft

On April 6th, a Village resident reported that $2,400 had been withdrawn from her bank account. The matter is under investigation by the bank and the Police Department.

Drug offense

- A 19-year-old man from Mount Vernon was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor on April 7th after being found smoking marihuana in Columbus Park, police said.

In addition, police officers also investigated:

- 12 motor vehicle accidents, including one "hit & run"

- The arrest of an intoxicated person on Grant Street who was charged with disorderly conduct in the afternoon of April 5th

- 7 vehicle stops and subsequent arrests for vehicle and traffic violations

 

Also last week, the Town of Mamaroneck Police Department investigated the following incidents:

Criminal mischief

- Between April 3rd and 11th, the exterior wall of the Central School building was vandalized with graffiti, police said. 

- In the early hours of April 11th, two cars parked on the Central School lot were keyed.

- Between the night of April 10th and the morning of April 11th, a vehicle parked on the Larchmont Acres lot was keyed.

Desobedience

- A 25-year-old man from the Village of Mamaroneck was arrested for violating an order of protection and charged with criminal contempt in the second degree. He was released and is set to appear in court.

In addition, police officers investigated one motor vehicle accident.
