Mamaroneck Town, Village Firemen Skate for Charity
"Fire on Ice" charity contest concludes with town volunteers the happy victors and worthwhile endeavors the deserving winners.
They have an unbroken bond of brotherhood, forged in the furnace of an unforgiving flame. Still, twice in the past year, Mamaroneck’s town and village volunteer firefighters have momentarily set aside their firehoses and fraternity to don hockey pads and do battle on ice—town vs. village. The departments most recently renewed their annual “Fire on Ice” rivalry Saturday at the Hommocks Park Ice Rink in Larchmont, raising money for a pair of worthy causes. While hundreds looked on in the cavernous arena, town firefighters jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. But the village vols fought back with successive unanswered goals to knot the contest in the second period. After that scoring spurt, however, it was all town, putting four pucks in the net to cruise to a 7-3 victory. The night's real winners, however, will be Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla and the Elmsford-based Burn Care... Everywhere Foundation, recipients of the money raised. Even at play, it seems, these firefighters accomplish what they routinely do: come to the aid of all who need their help.
