New Book by Larchmont Psychologist Aims to Help People End Self-Criticism
Reception for "The Bitch in Your Head: How to Finally Squash Your Inner Critic" Author May 1, 5:30-7:30 pm at Anderson's Book Shop
Referring to her latest book, The Bitch in Your Head: How to Finally Squash Your Inner Critic, which is being released on May 1, long-time Larchmont resident, psychologist, and author Dr. Jaqueline Hornor Plumez says that the book “offers tools and techniques to rid yourself of negative thinking in every area of your life – and in every era of life.”
The book draws from her experience as a psychologist, working with patients whose negative self-talk was often very damaging to themselves. Dr. Plumez asserts that “most women (and many men) live with a litany of self-defeating self-criticism like: You’re too fat! How could you be so stupid? Who do you think you are? Nobody wants to hear what you have to say. Don’t even try; it will never work.” She explains that “we would never say these things to a friend or our child because we know they would be depressing and discouraging, so we have to stop saying these things to ourselves!”
Recipient of both the Distinguished Psychologist and Distinguished Service awards from The Westchester County Psychological Association, in May, Dr. Plumez will receive Bucknell University’s 2015 Service to Humanity award. Initially surprised to learn that she would be awarded this distinction by Bucknell, Dr. Plumez says that after further reflection, “I’ve come to think that if my book helps women stop being so mean to themselves, that really will be a service to humanity -- even though I will never be Mother Theresa.”
