The New Jewish Home Celebrates National Grandparents Day

The New Jewish Home Brings Families Together With National Grandparents Day Celebrations

Generations of families gathered to celebrate National Grandparents Day with live music, carnival games, prizes, a petting zoo and more at The New Jewish Home's skilled-nursing campuses in Manhattan and Westchester, NY, and at Kittay Senior Apartments, the organization's independent living community in the Bronx. The events took place at all three locations throughout the month of September.

Dozens of family members of all ages joined tenants at Kittay and the residents of the Manhattan campus to kick off the Grandparents Day celebrations on September 8 with an afternoon of intergenerational activities that included bingo, face painting and family arts and crafts. Clowns and balloon artists provided entertainment for both the young and old, and back-to-school prizes were handed out to grandchildren.

A live jazz band had families dancing and swinging at Kittay, while the cover-band "Squeaky Clean" played music from the '50s and '60s for families at the Manhattan campus.

The festivities continued on September 22 at Sarah Neuman, The New Jewish Home's Westchester campus, with a BBQ featuring a magician, children's games, crafts, balloon animals and a petting zoo. Residents and their families, who were invited to dress in '60s and '70s disco era costumes, also enjoyed treats like cotton candy and ice cream sundaes while they listened and danced to live musical entertainment.

Family-friendly events, like Grandparents Day, at The New Jewish Home gives our older adults an opportunity to spend time with their families, especially grandchildren, in a fun setting. Kittay tenant Doria Bently, who spent the afternoon with three generations of her family, said, "It feels really, really wonderful just to have them here with me, especially my great-grandchild."
