NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to Speak in Mamaroneck Oct. 14

Scheiderman will address Mamaroneck High School students and the community about restoring trust in Albany.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman will speak to Mamaroneck High School (MHS) students and community members Wednesday evening, Oct. 14, beginning at 7:30 pm in McLain Auditorium at MHS, school officials announced.

Schneiderman’s appearance -- focused on “How to Restore Public Trust and Confidence in Albany” -- is the result of collaboration between MHS Social Studies Teacher Joe Liberti’s Advanced Placement United States Government & Politics class and the League of Women Voters of Larchmont/ Mamaroneck.

The event is free and open to the public, but donations are invited for the Students Inside Albany program. SIA provides high school students with a unique 3-day experience examining the important role of NY State government.

“In class, we’ll be discussing the Attorney General’s role and the potential impact of some of the proposed policies,” said Liberti in a statement. “I work hard to make sure that our class is more than just an AP course. It’s an experience. Students are able to learn in class and then have the follow-up benefit of first-hand interaction with the real world of politics.”

Liberti added, “Given the level of cynicism about politics today, it’s extremely important that students see there are bright, dedicated elected officials who thoughtfully engage in important public policy.”

“Good government relies upon educated citizens participating in our democracy,” said Beth Radow, former League of Women Voters president and current board member, in a statement. “The League of Women Voters considers this collaboration with Mamaroneck High School an ideal opportunity to engage our students, their families and community members in a dialogue on governance that can help shape the future.”

Liberti explained that he wants his students “to understand the importance of the Attorney General as a figure in State politics,” and view the evening as a valuable educational opportunity for both themselves and the broader community.

The evening’s format will begin with brief introductory remarks by Radow and Liberti, followed by the Attorney General’s presentation and then Q&A led by both Liberti and Radow. Audience member questions will round out the night’s event, which ends around 9 p.m.
