The public libraries in Larchmont and Mamaroneck are pleased to announce twenty-four library-sponsored events for ONE BOOK – ONE COMMUNITY: 1968, the third community-wide reading initiative. The events take place throughout the month of April and are scheduled at both the Larchmont Public Library and the Mamaroneck Public Library. At twenty-four events, the opportunities for people in the community to participate are double that of previous One Book-One Community reading initiatives which took place in 2014 and 2016.

The book selected as the centerpiece for One Book – One Community - 1968: THE YEAR THE ROCKED THE WORLD, by Mark Kurlansky – serves as the jumping off place for each event. From art and photography exhibits to documentary films, theatrical films released in 1968, crafts workshops, game programs, events about the music scene in 1968, and engaging lectures and discussions, there is something for everyone in this year’s One Book- One Community Reading Initiative. A free comprehensive Event Guide including detailed information about each event is now available at both libraries. Information about the events is also available on each library’s website.

Arguably the most tumultuous and volatile year in our history, 1968 was the year of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Yet it was also the year of the Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bobby Kennedy assassinations; the riots at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago; Prague Spring; the antiwar movement and the Tet Offensive; Black Power; the generation gap; avant-garde theater; the upsurge of the women’s movement; and the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union. Mark Kurlansky’s book brings to teeming life the cultural and political history of that pivotal year, when television’s influence on global events first became apparent, and spontaneous uprisings occurred simultaneously around the world. Encompassing the diverse realms of youth and music, politics and war, economics and the media, 1968 shows how twelve volatile months transformed who we were as a people and led us to where we are today, fifty years on. Books are available at both libraries.

ONE BOOK – ONE COMMUNITY builds on the huge success of the first two community read initiatives in 2014 and 2016, in which over 10,000 people participated throughout Larchmont, Mamaroneck and the surrounding area each year. The libraries will be offering community-wide events aimed at bringing residents into a common dialogue that is at once thought-provoking and enlightening and that educates. The One Book – One Community reading initiative for 2018 promises to be the biggest yet.
