Similar to the DWI sobriety checkpoints set up by local police on holidays, the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department (VMPD) will be checking for drunk drivers, but not on the roadways.
This weekend, from July 28-30, the VMPD will take part in Operation Dry Water, a nationally coordinated program to catch people boating under the influence (BUI).
Those who have a blood alcohol content exceeding the state limit of .08 can be subject to fines, arrest or the loss of boating/driving privileges.
"We are dedicated to keeping boaters safe on our waters. Boating is a safe and enjoyable pastime when people stay alert and follow the rules,” said VMPD Chief Christopher Leahy, in a statement. "You will see our officers out on the water looking for boaters who are operating a vessel under the influence."
Boaters can expect increased patrols, breathalyzer tests, and checkpoints for the duration of Operation Dry Water.
Operation Dry Water 2013 is a joint program of Marine law Enforcement agencies, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard. For more information, visit www.operationdrywater.org.
