SUEZ To Begin Spring Hydrant Flushing In Westchester

Water utility SUEZ will begin its spring fire hydrant maintenance and water main flushing program in Rye Brook, Ardsley, Port Chester and Dobbs Ferry the week of April 2. The work will continue throughout Westchester County over the next several weeks. Flushing will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“The project is part of the company’s routine maintenance program to assure high water quality and reliability,” said Roberto Hernandez, manager of SUEZ operations in Westchester. “It is also necessary to be sure that the hydrants are working properly in the event that they need to be used by firefighters.”

As part of this work, SUEZ employees will let water flow from the hydrants to remove harmless minerals that collect in the water mains. During this time, customers may temporarily experience low water pressure or discolored water. While the water is safe, customers may prefer to wait until the water runs clear before drinking or washing clothes or dishes. Running the cold water from the lowest point in the house (usually the basement) for several minutes typically clears the lines.
