Currently 29 of our 50 states have legalized the medical use of marijuana. New York State legalized medical marijuana in 2016 when Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Compassionate Care Act. Dr. Junella Chin, a Bronx native who moved back to New York from California two years ago, has extensive experience integrating medical cannabis into treatment for adults and children. Dr. Junella Chin is a certified cannabis physician with offices in White Plains and Manhattan. For over 15 years, Dr. Chin has been integrating medical cannabis to children and families in her medical practice in California, a state with legalized medical marijuana since 1996. She has seen firsthand just how much medical marijuana can benefit patients and how the use of cannabis in these patients have improved their quality of life, alleviated suffering, and with less side effects compared to other prescription medication.

“Patients are looking for reliable information about medical cannabis, but there are few trusted, healthcare-provided resources. As a consequence, this leaves them looking for advice from unconventional sources”, said Dr. Chin. “As doctors, we need to be capable of engaging in meaningful discussions with patients regarding the potential harms and the benefits of medical cannabis”.
Under New York State law, to date the medical conditions that qualify for being treated with medical cannabis include, cancer, HIV/AIDS, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, chronic pain, seizures, epilepsy, neuropathies, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease, damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord, and multiple sclerosis.

In addition to her practice in White Plains and Manhattan, Dr. Chin teaches Continuing Medical Education (CME) for medical students and residents to learn about medical cannabis in order to facilitate this conversation at the physicians-in-training level.
