Village of Mamaroneck Police Warn About Sophisticated Con Edison Scam
The flimflam artists even have the correct account names and numbers of the victims on file making the scheme more believable.
MAMARONECK, NY — An ongoing fraud scheme that involves a fake Con Edison representative calling and threatening to shut off power/heat unless immediate payment is made via the Zelle app is targeting local homeowners. The Village of Mamaroneck Police Department warned residents Friday morning that there have been several recent victims in the area.
Police say the con is more sophisticated than previous versions of the scam. The phone number used looks very much like a legitimate call service with options to speak with a representative, according to cops. The VOMPD says that the suspects even have the correct account names and numbers of the victims on file making the scheme more believable.
Payments in the cases being investigated were made via the Zelle app to a New York City phone number, according to police.
