The Roger Rees Awards Program recognizes outstanding student performances and achievements in high school musical theatre. To be considered for a prestigious Roger Rees Award, registered schools from across the New York area submit two students to represent their musical production. Due to the pandemic, the student performers were asked to submit an audition video this year which was then evaluated by professionals in the theatre industry to determine the top 25 female and male nominees. The winners were announced during an online awards presentation on the Broadway Education Alliance YouTube channel. During the virtual ceremony, Schauder expressed how special this recognition was.

“Cassidy Baltazar is my best friend,” he said. “We’ve been doing theatre together through all of my years in high school and I think being a part of this together has just solidified that even more and it has been such an unforgettable experience to go through with her. I don't think I’ll ever forget this time we shared together.”

Lisa Levenberg, MacArthur High School music teacher and drama director, has watched the two students shine on stage since they were in middle school.

“It’s been a joy to watch them both grow and develop their talents over the years,” she said. “They are both so deserving of this honor. They put their all into every role they perform, and it is a joy for me as a director and teacher to work with them. I am so incredibly thrilled and proud to see them recognized for their fantastic performances!”
