Clam Eating Contest to Benefit South Shore Firehouses This Weekend

Funds raised will go to firehouses damaged in Hurricane Sandy.

Long Island seafood lovers can indulge for a good cause this weekend on the South Shore.

The Annual Long Island Clam Eating Contest is set for Sunday at Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park.

The contest is raising money to benefit South Shore firehouses devastated in Hurricane Sandy.

At 2:30 p.m., contestants will compete against locals and international competitive eating champions, including Takeru Kobayashi, of Japan, who is a former Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Champion.

Island Park, Long Beach, Lakeview, Baldwin, Point Lookout, and East Rockaway have confirmed they will send some of their best firefighters to compete in the challenge. Some winners will receive cash prizes.

There will also be an open clam eating contest for the public at 4 p.m. Entrance fees are $20 per person and will go to the winning firehouse. Contestants in the open contest will also be up for cash prizes.

Registration will be held the day of the competition.
