Class of 2015 Graduates From Division Avenue High

Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex was filled with an atmosphere of pride and excitement as 257 graduates from Division Avenue School in Levittown took a step towards a new life beginning during the 56th commencement exercises.

Under the direction of Mark Martufi, the high school orchestra played “Pomp and Circumstance” as the graduates filed onto the floor with Board of Education trustees, administrators and faculty. Student Council President Christina Reilly led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the concert choir’s singing of the national anthem under the direction of Paige Hardison.

In her opening remarks, Principal Joan Lorelli touted the graduates’ accomplishments and encouraged them to be brave, take risks and to discover their identities. “Have the courage to discover your identity and embrace it,” Lorelli said. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald also urged the students to make a positive mark on the world.

Guest and Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray told the students that connecting with others will assist them in growing as human beings, while Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes explained that “stepping up” is the beginning of becoming “somebody.” U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer also told the graduates now is the time to figure out their dreams.

As part of the Levittown tradition, salutatorian Christopher Thompson addressed his peers by pointing out that everyone will have the opportunity to make it to many of the world’s “mountaintops.” Valedictorian Krysten Garcia then gave advice not to take shortcuts and to work past failures. “Remember that no one path is the right path,” she stated.

After Board President Peggy Marenghi certified that the seniors had met the requirements for graduation, the students approached the stage to receive his or her diploma and to become alumnus of the Levittown School District. Prior to joining their families, the Class of 2015 then watched a commemorative video presentation that featured short video clips and featured photographs of their year together.
