Island Trees Library Budget and Trustee Vote

On Apr. 26, the Island Trees Library will be holding the annual budget and trustee voting session. This is open to all Island Trees School District residents and will take place from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the library’s Dolores M. Morehouse Community Room.

In these tough economic times, the library is sensitive to taxpayers and is therefore increasing the budget at a minimal 1 percent. All staff, administration and board members are deeply committed to providing the best service and materials for local residents in a cost-effective manner. The average annual tax for libraries per household is approximately $168, but vary according to home value.

Recently, the library has been able to reduce the operating budget by $16,700 by reducing personnel, staying the same on books and increasing funds for popular media, such as DVDs and e-books.

There is one library trustee seat up for election, with the term beginning July 2011 and running through June 2016. Gerald Schmotzer, the incumbent, is running unopposed.

The Island Trees Library is encouraging everyone to vote. The budget will be mailed to every house and copies will also be available at the library. For additional information on absentee ballots and other questions, please call (516) 731-2211.
