Island Trees Middle School Notebook: April 24

First Place at eCYBERMISSION

A team from Island Trees Memorial Middle School beat out thousands of students and won first place in New York State at a recent eCYBERMISSION competition.

The first place team, “The Smart Kids,” designed a basket/filter to prevent garbage and debris from passing into sewer drains on our streets.

The team members who won first place are Anthony Muscarello, Matthew Jorgensen, Bryan Choi and Brian Cordova.

Each year students in New York State participate in the prestigious eCYBERMISSION Competition sponsored by the United States Army.

In the eCYBERMISSION Competition, students are challenged to brainstorm an invention and test their creations.

Each student who won first place will receive a $500 savings bond.

Their project is being considered for a national award.

Five Semifinalists for Christopher Columbus Awards

Five Memorial Middle School Science Enrichment teams have been named as semifinalists in the prestigious Christopher Columbus Awards competition. 

From a group of thirty semi-finalists, eight teams will be selected to compete in the finals at Walt Disney World during the last week of school in June. 

The winning team will be awarded a $25,000 grant to develop, patent, and market their project. 

Students on the first place team will each be given a $2,000 United States Savings Bond. 

The five semifinal teams from Island Trees are the most of any school in the nation.

The Handy Cans: Alesha Ali, Troy Veritzan, John Jeannetti and Michael Henken

Squirmy Wormies: Kayla Strong, Alina Stoita and Kim Weisdorfer

The Alphas: Sarah Gonzalez, Kasey Friedenreich, Niha Chowdhury and Marie Chavez

Team Infinity: Collin Skelly, Vincent Simonetti, Louis Pisano and Eugene Goh 

LI Bulldogs: Kamran Hussein, Andrew Stubenrauch, Frank Lisa and Anthony Giambona

Finalists will be announced on April 27.
