Lady Generals Finish Regular Season Undefeated
The MacArthur varsity girls' soccer team emerged victorious in their final game against Port Washington.
The undefeated Lady Generals (11-0-1) closed the 2010 season with a big win Monday night, shutting out Port Washington, 6-0. Port Washington's Lady Vikings (4-7-1) were a good match for the Generals but could not overcome their powerful plays.
"There weren't just a couple key players today. Every single one of our girls can start and play at every game," said MacArthur Head Coach Lauren Gotta. "They're all just as good. It depends how well they mesh with our opposing team."
MacArthur shot ahead early with five goals in the first half alone. The Vikings' offense had difficulty making their way across the field and were only able to make three attempts at a goal.

The Generals' goalie, Tracy Mitzelman, accumulated three saves and her eleventh shutout of the season. Mitzelman had the help of Kelly Kempf and Jenny Scro who took control on defense.
The second portion of the game was more challenging on both sides. Port Washington's goalie, Sara Marinelli, stepped up her game in the second half, allowing the Generals to score just one time. The Generals had no problem surpassing the Vikings' defense, but Marinelli stood strong with a total of eight saves.

Amanda Cantos scored twice for MacArthur, accompanied by Jill Mulholland, Kelly Kempf and Kristen Gay who each added one goal. Courtney Noakes scored the final goal in the second half. Both Mulholland and Noakes also had an assist to help their team advance.
The Generals are the top team in Conference II. They are hoping to make it further in the playoffs than they did last year, when they were knocked out by Farmingdale.
Being in first place, MacArthur has earned a bye in the first round and plans to use this successful season as their momentum to exceed last year's standing.
"Last year was a heartbreaker, losing in double overtime to Farmingdale," said Gotta. "We're hoping that we'll be successful. We want to make it to the semi-finals."
