Letter to the Editor: Fight a Zoning Change for Crocus Lane Project

Levittown Resident Rick Ekberg shares his thoughts on the proposed Crocus Lane project; Town of Hempstead to hold hearing on September 4.

The following is from Levittown resident Rick Ekberg.

A letter to the Editor:

JOSATA builders, is once again scheduled to appear before Kate Murray, Gary Hudes, and the entire Hempstead Town Board, to request a special zoning change for the land between Orchid and Blacksmith Roads. The current LPRD zoning for that land allows single family houses. The zoning change is necessary to build a private multi-dwelling attached condo complex of approximately 50 units and parking for about 117 cars (about 30 parking spaces short of what is required for such a complex).

The decision that Kate Murray, Gary Hudes, and the Town Board make could change the face of Levittown as we know it. If the Town Board allows the land to be removed from the current LPRD zoning, the builder will be allowed to build the multi-family attached condos. What would stop JOSATA or another builder from buying several Levitt houses on another block, knocking them down, and appearing before the Town Board in hopes to get the same zoning change and build another multi-dwelling condo complex? The builder would be able to use the zoning change of the land between Crocus and Blacksmith Roads as precedence. JOSATA also owns a similar lot between Orchid Road and Woodcock Lane. The Levittown Property Owners Association (LPOA) has been fighting this re-zoning for some time now.

The Town of Hempstead Town Board will hear anyone who would like to speak about this critical matter on September 4th at Town Meeting Pavilion, One Washington Street, Hempstead N.Y., at 10:30am. This critical hearing could change the face of all Levittown. It is crucial for all Levittown residents to attend.
