Letter to the Editor: Irwin Challenges Dunne's Record on Sewer System
Democrat Ethan Irwin challenges his opponent's record on the privatization of the sewer systems.

Editor's Note: Democrat Ethan Irwin is challenging Republican incumbent Dennis Dunne, Sr. for the 15th Legislative District seat.
I'm not an elected official, but whether as a father to my two small children or as an attorney representing my clients, I need to employ the principals of leadership on a daily basis.
We all understand that a critical part of leadership is keeping your word. Just a few weeks ago, as reported in Newsday, Mr. Dunne stated that he was opposed to the sale of our public sewer system to private profiteers, or as I call it "pay-per-flush." However, Wednesday evening I came to find out the truth. Earlier this week, the week before the election, Mr. Dunne went back on his word and voted for "pay-per-flush" in the legislature. (Irwin posted a copy of the part of the budget he is referring to on his website.)

Everyone that has talked to me knows exactly how I feel about this issue and how I would vote if elected. So whether you agree with "pay-per-flush" or not is not the issue, the issue is Mr. Dunne intentionally misinforming his constituents and failing as a leader.
While serving in the Marine Corps I understood my duty was to serve the country and its people. For anyone fortunate enough to hold a public office, the same obligation to serve is required. I believe many of our elected officials, Mr. Dunne included, have forgotten their duties to the public.

So as we get closer to election day this Tuesday, November 8th, I would like to leave you with this pledge: I promise to my friends and neighbors that I will always speak the truth to you, no matter how bitter a pill it is to swallow. If elected, I will never forget that my purpose as a public official is to serve you.
Patch asked Legis. Dunne for a response to Irwin's letter. That response is here.
