Levittown Fire Department Honors Fallen Chief Ronald Kerwin

The chief died while saving lives at the World Trade Center on September 11.

The Levittown Fire Department's annual Sept. 11 service honoring fallen Chief Ronald T. Kerwin took place in front of the department's headquarters on Sunday night.

Kerwin, who was also a Lieutenant in the FDNY, gave his life to save others at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

The service this year was extra-special in honor of the tenth anniversary of the attacks as a new monument was dedicated during the ceremony. Two halves of a steel beam from the World Trade Center site (a gift from the Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey received in July) were unveiled at the ceremony. The beam was cut in half to symbolize the two towers that fell that day.

Numerous members of the fire department spoke at the service, including Chief Charles D. Giudice, Ladder Company 1 Captain Thomas Lynch and Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners Joel Bearman. Honorary Fire Department member David Fisk, a close friend of Kerwin's, spoke, as did Kerwin's brother-in-law Glenn Pressler. The memorial was revealed following Chief Giudice's speech.

The ceremony concluded with a playing of the song "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits. Lyrics of the song were provided on the back of the special programs issued.
