Levittown Fire Department Remembers Frank Scarangella

The ex-Fire Commissioner passed away on Dec. 7.

The Board of Fire Commissioners, Chiefs and officers of the Levittown Fire District regret to announce the passing of ex-Fire Commissioner and active member Frank J. Scarangella, 74, after a brief illness. He answered his final alarm on December 7, 2011.  

Frank was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He joined the Levittown Fire Department Engine Company Two in 1970, located at the Hickory Lane fire house. He was elected by Levittown residents to the office of Fire Commissioner in 1980 and served six five-year terms before leaving office. He also served as Santa's helper in department Christmas festivities for many years, to the delight of local children.

At the time of his retirement, he was Deputy Commissioner of the Town of Hempstead Highway Department. He served as President of the Town of Hempstead Employee Federal Credit Union. He also served as a director of the Vocational Education & Extension Board (VEEB) and was a member of the Sons of Italy.

He looked forward to that every year. He is survived by Pat, his wife of 51 years, daughters Loretta Johnson (Kurt) and Dina Barbour (Stephen) and sister Marianne Curry. Scarangella was the cherished grandfather of Maxwell, Amy, Tyler and Taylor.

He was escorted to Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury by the members and apparatus of his department, passing under several U.S. flag arches along the way. Joel Bearman, Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, praised Commissioner Scarangella for his service to his country, community and department. May he rest in peace.
