Levittown Softball Team Reaches Babe Ruth World Series

The team got over the hump this year after near-misses in the previous two seasons.

The Levittown Slammers fast-pitch softball team became the first Metro New York area team to qualify for the Babe Ruth World Series after defeating the Northern NJ champs from Hoboken 10-4 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on July 24.

The Slammers’ first Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship came after two near-misses in the last two years. They won the Babe Ruth Metro New York Championship each of the past three years, but finished second in the Mid-Atlantic Championship in 2010 and third in 2009. The Slammers qualified for this year’s Mid-Atlantic Tournament by beating a team from Staten Island in this year’s Babe Ruth Metro New York Championship.

Standouts for the Slammers in the Mid-Atlantic tournament were Alannah Basile and Toniann Pasqueralle, both with .667 batting averages for the series. Starting pitcher Ashley Massoni was 3-0 with 18 strikeouts, while catcher Kristen Arbiter threw out 4 of 5 runners attempting to steal. The MVP of the championship game was Shamar Sanchez, who had four hits against Hoboken.
