MacArthur Girls Soccer Opens Season With Win

The 5-0 road victory gives MacArthur a 1-0 start.

The MacArthur Generals (1-0) girls soccer team defeated the East Meadow Lady Jets (0-1) on Monday afternoon by a 5-0 score.

The Generals scored all five of their goals in the first half. Center midfielder Jill Mullholland scored two of them for the Generals. Two subs for MacArthur, Arianna Montefusco and Christina Cottane, scored one goal each, while sweeper Jenna Scro added a goal for MacArthur.

While East Meadow didn't score any goals in the second half, they succeeded in stopping the Generals from scoring again. Goalie Nicole Castro had a total of 8 saves for the game.

Expectations this year are high for the Generals, who return most of their starting lineup from a team that went undefeated during the regular season a year ago. They made it to the Class AA semifinals a year ago where Oceanside beat them 2-1.

Head coach Lauren Gotta was happy with what she saw on Monday. "Everyone one of our players is fantastic," said Gotta.  "When I say that everyone can shoot outside the 18 and hit the net, I mean that. I'm very proud of them, and hopefully we'll continue to play like this as the season continues."

East Meadow was the sixth seed in the first round of the Class AA playoffs last year, losing to Baldwin in their first playoff game.  This season they have five seniors on their team, six juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen.

"MacArthur is terrific, and today they just went through our entire team," said Lady Jets head coach Adam Hananel.  "We're a young team. We have a lot of young faces out there.  We made some formation changes in the second half, but it just wasn't enough. We're going to do our best to settle the ball down, and prepare for Wednesday."

Both teams are back in action Wednesday. East Meadow will play at Oceanside while MacArthur is home against Farmindgale.
