Nassau County Team Of The Week: Which Athletes Are Making A Difference

Athletes from Baldwin, Long Beach, Massapequa and Plainview-Old Bethpage were all at the top of their game this week.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY. — As the week draws to a close, athletes across Nassau County are reflecting on the ups and downs of another part of their season. In Baldwin, Long Beach, Massapequa and Plainview-Old Bethpage, it was more up than down.

Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK Volleyball Team Gets Recognition From District, County Legislator

The Plainview-Old Bethpage girls’ volleyball team finished their regular season 17-0, winning their second consecutive Nassau County title in the fall and the first Long Island Championship in program history. At a recent student recognition ceremony, district officials and Nassau county Legislator Arnold Drucker gave the county championship team a shoutout for their exceptional work.

“Seeing so many talented and accomplished students from the guidance, English, art, music, mathematics and business departments being recognized for their achievements fills me with tremendous optimism for our future,” Drucker said. “As a lifelong Plainview resident, a graduate of this district, and a father whose children’s lives were enriched tremendously by their experiences in these schools, it was especially gratifying to honor the girls’ volleyball team for their historic run. Congratulations to everyone, keep making us proud!”

Girls’ Hoops: Baldwin, MacArthur, Southside, Seaford Wrap Up Undefeated League Seasons

Baldwin, MacArthur, Garden City, South Side, Wantagh, Seaford and Cold Spring Harbor won regular season conference championships in their respective classes this week, with playoffs kicking off Thursday night.

For MacArthur, the conference championship comes after a 20-0 regular season, including a 12-0 mark in league play. Baldwin, Cold Spring Harbor, South Side and Seaford completed undefeated regular seasons in league play.

In Thursday night’s playoff action, New Hyde Park, Roslyn, Jericho and Calhoun were victorious, advancing to the county quarterfinals next week.

Eight games are scheduled to take place Saturday, with North Shore v. Plainedge, Locust Valley v. Wantagh, Malverne v. Seaford, Port Washington v. Massapequa, Lynbrook v. Floral Park and Farmingdale v. Baldwin kicking off Class A’s playoffs. In Class AAA action, Syosset will take on East Meadow at 11 a.m. Saturday, while Freeport takes on Uniondale at 12 p.m.

Boys' Hoops: Playoffs Action Kicks Off With Mid-Week Contests

Playoffs are already underway in boys' basketball, and Seaford, Wheatley, Uniondale, Syosset and Lynbrook already punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of their respective classes Wednesday. Thursday night, teams from Elmont, Hewlett, Long Beach, Jericho and Manhasseet won their first-round matchups in Class-AA action.

Eight quarterfinal matchups will take place between classes A and AAA Saturday, as Wheatley plays Floral Park at 11 a.m., Valley Stream Central plays Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK at noon and Seaford plays West Hempstead, also at noon.

Later in the afternoon, Uniondale will take on Port Washington at 1 p.m., Lynbrook will play Malverne at 3 p.m. and Valley Stream North takes on Friends Acadamy, also at 3 p.m. Closing out the day of hoops action will be a 4 p.m. matchup between Farmingdale and Westbury and a 6 p.m. contest between Syosset and top-seeded Baldwin.

Sunday, Class B semifinals will take place at Farmingdale State, with Oyster Bay taking on Carle Place and East Rockaway taking on Cold Spring Harbor.
