Oil Spill at Fortune Wheel Seafood Restaurant

Overflow in restaurant grease traps spills out into parking lot.

An oil spill at the Fortune Wheel Seafood Restaurant along Hempstead Turnpike overflowed into the parking lot on Friday night, creating dangerously slick conditions.

According to emergency workers at the scene, the sewer of the Fortune Wheel Chinese Restaurant backed up from the man hole covers in front of the restaurant all the way to the inside of the building, causing grease and raw materials to spill into the roadway and parking lot in front of the restaurant (as well as in front of nearby Bj's Wholesale and Best Buy stores).

The heavy rains caused the overflowing waste to quickly spread as fire fighters used dozens of bags of speedy dry, absorbent pads and booms to contain the spill. The restaurant was closed by the board of health for the evening and a sander was called to sand the dangerously slick parking lot and roadway.

The Levittown Fire Dept. was called to the scene at 7:49 p.m., along with the Department of Health and the Department of Public Welfare. Citywide Sewer & Drains were called to the scene as well, and began unclogging the drains outside the restaurant.

The Department of Health and DPW will assess what will be done with the parking lot. It was not certain how long it would take to unclog the drains.
