Slammers Get Vital Win Over Hamburg In Babe Ruth World Series

The Levittown-based Mid-Atlantic Champion moved to 2-1 in pool play.

The Levittown Slammers U16 softball team is in charge of its own destiny at the Babe Ruth World Series after topping a team from Hamburg, Arkansas 1-0 in nine innings on Monday.

Shamar Sanchez's single in the bottom of the ninth drove in Alannah Basile with the only run of the game to move the Slammers to 2-1 in pool play in the tournament.

Basile was the story of the day for Levittown, winning the game's MVP award. She pitched all nine innings without allowing a run for the victory. She allowed just three hits over those nine innings, walking five. She also struck out 14, which was three strikeouts short of a World Series record.

The Slammers scratched out seven hits against Hamburg's starter, who also pitched all nine innings, but they were unable to get on the scoreboard in the first eight innings. Basile went 2-for-4 on the day and reached in the ninth before Sanchez drove her in with her first hit of the day.

Meghan Acton also had two hits for the Slammers, who simply need to win their final pool game today against a team from Osawatomie, Kansas in order to seal a spot in the World Series' double elimination bracket. The game will start at 3:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time). A win will assure the Slammers of at least second place in the pool.
