Slammers Split First Two Games of Pool Play at Babe Ruth World Series

The team from Levittown beat the Colorado state champion on Saturday but lost to a team from North Carolina on Sunday.

The Levittown Slammers 16-and-under softball team split their first two games of pool play in the Babe Ruth World Series on Saturday and Sunday.

The Slammers topped the Colorado state champion from Burlington (East Central) on Saturday by a 10-0 score (the game was called after five innings). They fell to 1-1 in pool play on Sunday after falling 7-3 to the southeast regional champion from Wilson County, North Carolina.

Levittown's ten runs in Saturday's game came on just three hits as they benefitted from twelve walks by East Central pitching. At the center of attention for the Slammers was pitcher Ashley Massoni, who dominated the East Central lineup. She allowed only two hits over the five innings and struck out 14 of the 17 batters to face her.

Things were rockier for Levittown starter Alannah Basile in Sunday's game. Basile gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits in two innings of work, walking three without striking out a batter. Massoni took over in the third and pitched the remaining five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits; she struck out one and didn't walk a batter.

The Slammers doubled their hit total from Saturday's game on Sunday, but were only able to push across three runs against Wilson County's pitcher, who pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out five. The Slammers did push two runs across in the top of the sixth, highlighted by an RBI triple from Sam Basile.
