Winter 2011-12 Preview: Division Boys Basketball

Division is looking for a comeback season after a tough campaign last year in addition to a number of graduated players to replace.

The Division boys basketball team experienced some struggles during the 2010-11 season, but with another year under their belts, the team is looking for a different result during this upcoming campaign.

Finishing with a 4-13 overall record last season left the Blue Dragons out of the Class A playoffs. However, under the leadership of second-year head coach Tom Williams, Division's goal is to make it back.

“Our team is working hard and they are responding," Williams said. "Although we have a lot of seniors, we are still kind of young with understanding some basketball I.Q. We need to be able to handle pressure and understand the team philosophy.”

Division graduated five seniors from last years’ team, including All-Conference player Matt Nagelberg and J.J. Kissane. Looking to lead the team this season are a group of experienced seniors, including Colby Lapp and Ryan Birmingham, who should provide a bulk of the scoring for the Blue Dragons.

Seniors Jonah Levy and John Hauschild will also provide leadership in the backcourt to aid Lapp, Birmingham and the rest of the Blue Dragon roster.

“We are expecting those seniors to step up as leaders, but collectively as a unit, all 14 have to be able to play together," said Williams. "We are only as strong as our weakest link.”

Switching from Conference A-II last year to Conference A-III this season may provide an additional challenge for Division, but at the same time, it gives them a fresh start. Lawrence and Hewlett will ultimately provide the biggest competition for the Blue Dragons. Sewanhaka, Plainedge and Bethpage round out the conference field.

Division will play a string of non-league games to test its ability in December and early January. The teams include Mineola (12/13), Garden City (12/20), Seaford (12/23), Wantagh (12/30) and Valley Stream South (1/4).

“There will be some new schools who we are playing," said Williams. "Every game is going to be a challenge."

Division tipped off its season at the MacArthur Tournament on Thursday night. Playing district rival Island Trees in the opening round added extra incentive. Through the first three quarters, Division held onto an eight-point lead. However, Island Trees stormed back in the final quarter to win 49-45. The Blue Dragons fell to Plainedge 56-54 in the tournament's consolation game.

Division is at Mineola tonight at 7:45 p.m. For complete schedule information, visit the Nassau Boces Athletics page.
