Alleghany Avenue Elementary School Names New Principal

Congratulations to Valerie Filbry​!

LINDENHURST, NY - The Lindenhurst School District recently named Valerie Filbry as principal of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School.

Filbry first joined the Alleghany staff in 2005 as a reading specialist.

In 2015, she took on the role of district literacy coach in which she worked directly with the assistant superintendent and assistant to the superintendent in the restructuring of the literacy curriculum.

This new position required her to collaborate with the district administration in setting goals and implementing the program in each school building.

In 2017 Filbry was recognized as a “New York State Senate Teacher of Excellence” award recipient.

Previous teaching experiences have included elementary positions at the pre-kindergarten and first-grade levels at St. Martin of Tours School in Amityville and a fourth-grade special education teaching position with the Nassau BOCES Extended Summer Program.

Filbry has earned Post Master’s Advanced Certificates in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership from Stony Brook University, a Master of Science degree in K-12 Literacy Education from Adelphi
University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in K-12 Special Education and K-6 Elementary Education with a minor in psychology from Molloy College in Rockville Centre.

Her thirst for knowledge has also lead her to St. John’s University where she is currently exploring Educational Administration and Supervision at the doctoral level.

"Alleghany Avenue has been a family to me for the last 13 years. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to support our parents, teachers and staff, as well as, to help facilitate the social, emotional and academic growth of our students," Filbry said. "As an educator and as a mother of three, it is my role to help children recognize their truest potential. By discovering their unique talents and passions in life, our children can reach for the stars and become the very best version of themselves in the process."
