Blog Roundup: Are You Ready for the Flu Season?

See what some Patch bloggers are saying this week.

Patch bloggers take time out of their busy days to let you know about some things going on in their neck of the woods. Here, we've gathered what a few of them from around the area had to say. Are You Ready for the Flu Season?

Flu season has begun, which reminds us of the need for a flu shot to prevent the sometimes-severe illness that feels awful and–for vulnerable patients like children and the elderly–can be life-threatening.

Influenza (“the flu”) is a highly contagious viral infection of respiratory tract. If you get a sudden fever with muscle aches, sore throat and a nonproductive cough (that is, a cough that doesn’t produce phlegm), it’s probably the flu.

Should Pregnant Women Get the Flu Shot?

It is time to bring up the flu vaccine again!  October is the start of the flu season, and it can run all the way into the spring.  The flu vaccines are available now, and remember, it takes about two weeks to produce the protective antibodies after receiving the vaccine.

Pregnant women who get the flu have an increased risk to develop serious complications from the infection, resulting in hospitalizations.

How to Breathe New Life into Your Basement

If your basement is dark and boring and if it feels like wasted space your family doesn't use, it is time to breathe new life into it. Basements tend to get a bad rap and they can be challenging to decorate. But, with just a few changes you can make the space more visually appealing and make it flow with the other rooms in your home.

Massage and School Age Children

Understanding the benefits of massage should prove how important massage can be to school age children from elementary to high school. The stresses of school for elementary children is often taken for granted; fitting in, bullying, eating right and even just learning a new concept for some can create a high level of anxiety.  High school age/teenagers stresses are clear as much as they are unclear and their choices for their future are so close.
