Celebrating The Spooky Season
Fourth-grade students at West Gates Avenue Elementary School explored Halloween-themed STEM activities with their kindergarten buddies.
LINDENHURST, NY - From Lindenhurst Union Free School District: Throughout the month of October, the students and staff of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District celebrated the Halloween season in myriad ways.
On the elementary level, several schools took part in Halloween parades, donning costumes for fellow students. Fourth- and fifth-grade students at West Gates Avenue Elementary School explored Halloween-themed STEM activities with their kindergarten buddies. Together students worked to construct a fence sturdy enough to support a mini pumpkin using a variety of materials, while others explored how gases are used to blow up balloon ghosts.
First-grade students of Harding Avenue Elementary visited senior citizens at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center for the annual Halloween show. The students paraded in costumes, sang songs, recited poems and danced. Several senior citizens received a small pumpkin from a student and was wowed by the finale of “I’m Proud
to be an American” sung by the students.

Students in Caitlin Farrell’s class at Harding Avenue Elementary School used pumpkins to bring books to life. Students selected a book to read, then decorated a pumpkin to reflect their favorite character. Students presented their writing and decorated pumpkins with classmates.
On Oct. 27, children throughout the Lindenhurst community gathered at the Lindenhurst High School for the annual Halloween celebration. Upon entering the building, members of the school’s Marine Corps JROTC collected nonperishable food items for those in need. This served as a voluntary admissions ticket to the event.

Sponsored and organized each year by the Student Council, the festivities provided a safe and fun environment for children to collect treats, play games and enjoy Halloween. Various clubs and student government organizations set up activities and games for the younger children in different rooms at the high school and decorated hallways in several familiar themes.
