BACCA celebrates two great years of music with a special concert featuring ELLY WININGER, GRAND FOLK RAILROAD and NEWLAND & MILLER.
Elly Wininger: “Armed with only an acoustic and/or National steel guitar, this woman of the mountains can weave all manner of spells with authoritative, expert finger picking, propulsive strumming, and snaky slide. A voice that is by turns sexy, determined and worldly wise rides atop spare, confident accompaniment....Wininger shows assurance as an interpreter...by giving each song new depth and breadth, letting resonant chords linger, and squeezing ache and desire out of every syllable she sings.
Grand Folk Railroad is the Long Island-based folk quartet with multiple-musical-personality-disorder. With a big voice that’s deeply rooted in old school country, you might expect honky-tonk inspired tales of love and loss from lead singer and songwriter, Susan Cohen. But there’s an edge and a sense of sophistication that quickly become apparent as the stories and melodies in Susan’s finely-crafted songs reveal themselves. This talented group of multi-instrumentalists, Susan Cohen, Mike Christian, Frank Doris & Bill Resvanis, also has an annoying habit of breaking into obscure, forgotten 60’s pop gems with a variety of instruments including acoustic/electric guitar, banjo, ukulele, upright/electric/Ashbory bass, and a cool suitcase drum kit. With a make-every-note-count approach to performing, a vast, eclectic repertoire and a sometimes questionable regard for folk music traditions, Grand Folk Railroad blurs the lines between folk, pop, rock and singer/songwriter genres.

Fred Newland and Cliff Miller have been in bands together since Junior High School. They spent many years playing the Long Island original music scene in the 70s and early 80s. Both married and started families young, so together through the years they concentrated their efforts on writing and recording and recently began playing out again. In the spring of 2010 they traveled to Nashville where they recorded the sound track for a book/film project called The Willicans. The results were magical. Cliff and Fred have decided to record another CD, a combination of heartfelt country ballads, mid and up-tempo Country rock tunes, a compilation of their best material chosen from scores of songs written together over several decades. The music will be recorded in Nashville with some of country music’s best musicians. The combination of their tight harmonies, profound lyrics and haunting melodies results in a rare musical beauty. Both The Music of The Willicans and The Newland & Miller Country CD are currently in production and will be available soon.
