Going For The Gold In Lindenhurst

From Lindenhurst Union Free School District: The 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea have not only inspired patriotism among students in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District but also scientific curiosity. Fourth-grade students of West Gates Avenue Elementary School and third-grade students of William Rall Elementary School recently took part in STEM activities designed to reflect the Olympic theme. In small teams, using materials such as aluminum foil, pipe cleaners, and washers students created plans and constructed bobsleds, curling rocks and ski jumpers. Using the scientific method, the students tested their equipment, made modifications and retested until they were confident their creation would take the gold in a class competition.

The fifth-grade students of Valerie Dietrich and Jen Cavallaro’s class at William Rall Elementary School got creative in a different way. Those students used their researching skills to create group Google Slide presentations in which they explored their favorite Olympic events in greater depth following a set criteria. Presentations, which included music, video clips and photographs, were researched, designed and presented by each group to their fellow classmates in front of a “panel of judges” (the classroom teachers).
