Lindenhurst High School Student 'Makes Comments' About Gun

The incident was reported on Friday, according to school officials.

LINDENHURST, NY - A Lindenhurst High School student reportedly made "verbal and nonspecific" comments about a gun on Friday, according to school officials.

After receiving the report, administrators immediately interviewed the student in question to gather more information, school officials say.

Officials determined that the student was neither a threat to himself or the greater school community, but still called Suffolk County Police out of an abundance of caution.

"Detectives met with the student and his parents and have reinforced our findings that there is no threat against the school," Superintendent Daniel E. Giordano said in a statement. "As we’ve said previously, the safety and security of our students and staff is the district’s top priority. Any potential threat against our schools must be taken seriously and reported to a trusted adult."

Giordano released a second statement on Wednesday addressing the concern from local parents.

"I appreciate that many of the parents in our community are requesting a more detailed account of what took place; however, I must balance informing the community of the necessary information with protecting student privacy under New York State law. I am not at liberty to discuss any additional details of what transpired but assure you that the district adhered to its protocols, as the safety of our students is our top priority. Please also be aware that in today’s digital age, rumors circulate throughout the community rapidly. In times of a threat or crisis, information shared on social media in many cases is full of misinformation. Please know that as a district, we work as quickly as we can to gather the facts before we communicate with parents. This, at times, cannot be as quick as the rumor mill spreads on social media. I understand that this can be frustrating; however, while we will work as fast as we can to communicate important information with parents, it cannot come at the expense of providing inaccurate or misleading information."
