Lindenhurst Middle School Students Go for the Gold

The Sochi Olympics were not the only competition that took place in February.  Students at Lindenhurst Middle School recently volunteered to participate in the Reading Olympic Challenge. Students Zachary Schinasi, Jessica Messina and Sandra Gandy won the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The challenge ran for the month of February and urged students to complete reading tasks to earn points. A list of more than 25 suggested tasks was given to each participant. Suggestions ranged from reading a book about the Olympics or less than 150 pages for five points, to finishing a series of three or more books and reporting on it for 25 points. Students were not limited in the number of tasks they could complete or points they could accrue, though a minimum of 50 points was required to be eligible to win a prize.

Zach, who earned a total of 280 points in the competition, won a Kindle Fire HD, while Jessica and Sandra earned Amazon gift cards in varying amounts for their efforts.  “There were really good prizes,” said Zach. “My goal was initially just to win, but I ended up discovering some really great books.”
