Lindenhurst students participated in the Nassau County Victory Challenge Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged.

From Lindenhurst Union Free School District: Lindenhurst students participated in the Nassau County Victory Challenge Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged, held recently at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale.
Athletes and student buddies participated in a series of activities and races including the 100-meter race and the discus throw. Faculty, parents, aides and administrators cheered the athletes as they worked to achieve their goals.
The student-athletes, who wore tie-dyed green T-shirts to showcase their pride in the district, joined in the spirited competition against each other and other schools from across Long Island. The games were coordinated for Lindenhurst by teacher Karen Parpounas and Courtney Whalley, chairperson for the Elementary Committee on Special Education.

“The Empire State Games provide a unique opportunity for our students to challenge themselves individually outside of the classroom setting, while still enjoying the social comradery that comes with being a part of something much larger,” said Ms. Whalley.
On June 11, a ceremony was held at the Lindenhurst Middle School to honor both athletes and Buddies.
