At Daniel Street Elementary School, students created cards for the local health care workers at Good Samaritan, Southside and Montefiore hospitals. Fifth grade students in Laura Colosa’s class decided to send their messages to essential health care workers directly related to their classmates. This included cards for the father, aunt and uncle of student Nick Rueb. Their efforts and research are helping to make the world a healthier and safer place for everyone.
Third grade students in Stacey Bressi’s class at William Rall Elementary School heard that there was a class of first grade students at the North Ridge Primary School in Commack who were disappointed to learn that their annual Valentine’s Day Party was canceled due to the pandemic. The William Rall students wrote friendly letters to the class in hopes of cheering them up. “We didn’t want any kids to feel sad, especially on a holiday,” said third grader Amelia Stankiewicz.

The idea of spreading joy through writing was also shared by the National Junior Honor Society students at Lindenhurst Middle School who recently started a “letter drive,” in which they, along with other students, aides, and teachers wrote letters to some of the elderly members of the community, who may be feeling alone and down during these difficult times.
