Lindy BOE honors West Gates student with the 2014 Pride of Lindenhurst Award

The Lindenhurst Board of Education presented the 2014 Pride of Lindenhurst Award to West Gates Avenue Elementary 3rd grader Matthew Yodice on June 11th during the Community Forum held at the LHS.

Matthew, on a quest to raise money from all 50 states for The American Heart Association through his school's Jump Rope for Heart event, posted videos of himself asking for donations to his mother's Facebook page.  Together with his mom he kept track of the donations and posted a map of the US, coloring in the states that had donated, to FB as well.  The videos were shared with friends and friends of friends and the donations poured in!  In all he raised $1800.00 with donors from ALL 50 states plus Canada, Puerto Rico, England and China!  A representative from The AHA visited the school the day of the event to present Matthew with a special certificate.  He was featured on the local news stations and written about in Newsday.  He was even featured on FiOs 1's Heroes on our Island series.

He would like to thank the Lindy BOE as well as all of the people who donated money to help those "with bad hearts".
