Along with Hans Christian Andersen, Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and a few others, Maurice Sendak was one of the most acclaimed creators of children's literature.

Best known for his book Where the Wild Things Are (1964), Sendak received the Caldecott, Newberry, Hans Christian Andersen and Laura Ingalls Wilder awards for his work as a writer and illustrator, as well as other honors.

Born in Brooklyn Sendak's love of books began at an early age when he developed health problems and was confined to his bed. He decided to become an illustrator after watching Walt Disney's film Fantasia at the age of twelve.

Sendak was also an early member of the National Board of Advisors of the Children's Television Workshop during the development stages of the Sesame Street television series, working closely with Jim Henson.

Sadly, Sendak recently died on the morning of May 8, 2012, in Danbury, Connecticut, from complications of a stroke.

But his work lives on. Here are some of his most notable works:

  • Where the Wild Things Are (1964)
  • Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life (1967)
  • In the Night Kitchen (1970)
  • Seven Little Monsters (1977)
  • Outside Over There (1981)
  • Bumble-Ardy (2011)

You could search for and reserve these books online at the LML website, and check them out at the library at One Lee Avenue.
